WILLIAM ELLIOTT |
GEORGE
WILLIAM ELLIOTT, passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, on May
26, 2011 at age 78. His memory will be forever cherished by his wife Joy; sons
Mitchell (Judy) and Keith (Leslie) as well as extended family and many
colleagues and friends. He was predeceased by his son Mark.
George was born in Tugaske, Saskatchewan in 1933. Trained as a
radio
operator, he
began a long career with the Government of Canada in the RCMP Marine Division
operating out of Halifax. He then moved into aviation, starting as a
radio
operator at
small northern airports and then a series of positions in airport
administration. In 1978, he was appointed the general manager of the Winnipeg
International Airport, holding that position until his retirement in 1989.
Retirement only opened a new set of opportunities for George as he followed his
passion for the aviation industry. He served as Executive Director of the
Western Canada Aviation Museum, President of the Canadian Aeronautical
Preservation Association, and as a member of many boards, including the Winnipeg
Airports Authority. George served on the Board of the Commissionaires Manitoba
for many years, including time as the board chair, and was actively involved in
another of his passions, the RCMP Veterans Association.
George was recognized many times for his contribution to transportation and the
community, including being named the Manitoba Transportation Person of the Year
and being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. George's greatest
interest, however, was always people and increasingly his address book and the
telephone became his most important possessions as his health started to fail.
It was always vital to him that he stay connected.
The family would like to thank the many many neighbours, friends and colleagues
(and their dogs) who called and visited with him. He loved you all. A private
family graveside burial has taken place and a celebration of George's life will
be held on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bridge Church, 620 Oxbow
Bend Road, Winnipeg, MB. The family wishes to thank everyone at the Grace
Hospital for their compassionate and professional care. In lieu of flowers
donations may be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation. I will say of the Lord,
He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalm 91.
